Mass in Troubled Times – Première

John’s large-scale new work for unaccompanied voices will be premiered by the BBC Singers,
conducted by Andrew Griffiths at St. Peter’s Church, Eaton Square, London, 1 February, 2019.
The work is the second collaboration with the writer Gavin D’Costa, who wrote the text for
Daughters of Zion. The text draws on multiple sources across five languages: the Ordinary of
the Mass, original poems unfolding a fictional narrative of a refugee father and daughter,
fleeing their war-torn country by sea, a Twitter hashtag in Turkish, a passage from the Syriac
Orthodox Church Liturgy and two passages in Arabic from the Qu’ran.
Tickets for the performance are free (first come, first served)
